Kenton Knepper, father of Wonder Words and many other “mentalsm “ products has decided to offer his private lesson series to the magic public. He has only submitted Lessons 1 and 2 for review, but there is no reason to expect the following lessons to be of any lesser quality. As soon as my backlog is cleared I intend to keep purchasing additional lessons.

There are many books filled with mind reading or mental magic tricks. There are also many books covering the theory of mentalism of mind reading, but this is the first attempt I’ve seen that teaches you to THINK like a mind reader. I had read through these lessons just before seeing a Professional Mentalist. I found myself counting the number of “mistakes” he made according to these lessons. I realized that, while they did not hurt the performance, had he made the subtle changes Kenton teaches his performance would have been that much stronger. He came across as someone doing mind tricks when he could easily have been considered a true mind reader.

The lessons are filled with theory, suggestions, things to consider as well as a few tricks. But then there is a one-week study guide, with exercises to do each day of the week. Personally I found that too intense and tended to spend 3-4 days on each exercise, meaning each lesson took closer to a month than a week. But since it is a correspondence class that doesn’t matter.

Do you need to be a good mentalist before starting these lessons? No, but you need to know the basic principles of mentalism. Practical Mental Effects by Annemann and 13 Steps to Mentalism by Corinda belong in every mentalists library and should provide you all the background you need. Like any good class, this starts with the basics and builds on each principle. The classes really need to be taken in order, and I suggest completing the exercises before even reading the next lesson. The better your foundation the better the next class will be.

The only way to buy these is from Kenton’s website and the descriptions he has for lessons 1 and 2 are pretty accurate. I suggest reading them before placing your order.

Lesson 1 is 40 pages, lesson 2 is 53 pages, all lessons are pdf download only. I’ve printed both lessons and took them to an instant print place and had them wire bound for $5, and will do the same as I buy the rest. Of course you can also just keep them in pdf and read them on your ebook reader or iPad.

If you haven’t guessed by now, these are highly recommended for the person who wants to quit being a magician and become a mind reader. If you are just looking for an effect to replace mental epic in your magic act there are much better ways to go about it. But for the true mind reading student these lessons should be considered required reading.
